Past perfect continuous tense

ماضی میں اگر کوئی کام مخصوص وقت سے پہلے جاری رہا ہو تو اسےہم”پاسٹ پفیکٹ کونٹینوس ٹینس” سے ظاہر کرتے ہیں۔

مثلاً”کل صبح جب میں علی سے ملا تو ہ وہ دو گھنٹے سے میرا انتظار کر رہا تھا”۔

پہچان:

تا رہا تھا، تی رہی تھی، تے رہے تھے۔

اگر وقت کا تزکرہ کرنا ہوتو، رہا تھا، رہی تھی، رہے تھے۔

HV:

He, she, it Had been
I, we, you, they Had been

Transformations

Affirmative:

Sub HV been V1+(ing).
He had been Playing.

Interrogative:

HV Sub been V1+(ing)
Had he been Playing?

Negative:

Sub had not been V1+ (ing)
He Had not been Playing.

Interrogative and negative:

HV Sub Not been V1+(ing)
had he Not been Playing.

Example Sentences with Urdu:

Simple sentences:

She had been watching the movies for two hours. وہ دو گھنٹے تک فلم دیکھ رہی تھی  
I had been learning English for many days.  میں کئی دنوں سے انگلش سیکھ رہا تھا 
They had been playing cricket.  وہ کرکٹ کھیل رہے تھے

Negative Sentences:

I had not been learning English for many days.  میں کئی دنوں سے انگلش نہیں سیکھ رہا تھا
It had not been snowing in Kohat.  کوہاٹ میں برف نہیں پڑتی رہی تھی
They had not been playing cricket.  وہ کرکٹ نہیں کھیل رہے تھے 

Interrogative Sentences:

Had they been playing cricket? کیا وہ کرکٹ کھیل رہے تھے؟  
Had we been driving a car at night?  کیا ہم رات میں کار چلارہے تھے؟ 
Had she been swimming well? کیا وہ اچھا تیر رہی تھی؟

Interrogative and Negative Sentences:

Had he not been participating in the party? کیا وہ پارٹی میں حصہ نہیں لے رہا تھا؟ 
Had they not been playing cricket? کیا وہ کرکٹ نہیں کھیل رہے تھے؟
Had you not been listening lecture? کیا آپ لیکچر نہیں سن رہے تھے؟ 

Use_1

تب استعمال کریں، جب کوئی کام ماضی میں کسی خاص وقت پے شروع ہوا اور ماضی میں ہی کسی خاص وقت تک جاری رہا۔

Examples:

  • We had been talking for over an hour before Zia arrived.
  • Salma had been washing the clothes since morning.
  • She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business.
  • How long had you been waiting to get on the bus?
  • Asim wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work.

Use_2

It is used to show cause and effect.

Examples.

  • Ahmad was tired because he had been jogging.
  • Sana gained weight because she had been overeating.
  • Naiha failed the final test because she had not been attending class.

NOTE!
Do not use NON continuous and NON continuous aspect of mixed verbs in this tense.

See the example below.

  • The motorcycle had been belonging to George for years before Tina bought it. Not Correct
  • The motorcycle had belonged to George for years before Tina bought it. Correct

Adverb Placement

Place the adverb just before “been” regardless of the formation of the sentence.

  • You had only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived.
  • Had you only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived?
