Definition:

Statements discussing known factors or hypothetical situations and their consequences.

There are four types of Conditional Sentences

  1. Zero Conditional
  2. First Conditional
  3. Second Conditional
  4. Third Conditional

Zero Conditional

Use: When we are thinking about facts which are generally true.

جب ہم حقائق کے بارے میں بات کریں۔

If + Present Simple, Present Simple

Example Sentences:

  • If you put water in the freezer, it becomes ice.
  • If you stand in the rain, you get wet.
  • If you heat ice, it melts.

 

First Conditional

Use: When we are thinking about a possible situation in the future.

جب ہم مستقبل میں کچھ ہونے کا اندازہ لگاتے ہیں۔

Possible plans, promises, warnings, threats or for persuading someone.

If + Present verb, future verb

Example Sentences:

  • If I have time, I will help you. (Promise)
  • If it rains, we will cancel the trip.
  • If you touch that wire, you will get an electric shock. (Warning)
  • If I go to Paris next month for work, I’ll visit the Eiffel Tower (Plans)

 

Second Conditional

Use: When we are talking about a situation in the present or future that is hypothetical, unlikely or impossible.

موجودہ یا مستقبل زمانے میں جب ہم کسی بات کا مفروضہ

بناتے ہیں۔

If + Past Simple, Would + Verb

Example Sentences:

  • If I knew his name, I would tell you.
  • If I didn’t have a headache, I would go to the party.
  • If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.
  • If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.

 

Third Conditional

Use: When we are talking about something in the past which cannot be changed now.

ایسا کام جس میں اب کوئی تبدیلی نا کی جا سکے

If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle

Example Sentences:

  • If I had seen you, I would have said hello.
  • If he had asked me, I would have helped him.
  • If I had known, I wouldn’t have done that.
